A Lesson In Archaeology

Assistant Professor Moosader here, going to be spouting off some information about the new secondary trade skill, Archaeology. Now I haven’t hit 525 so I am by no means an expert, yet.

First things first DO NOT SOLVE ANY ARTIFACTS UNTIL YOU HIT 100! And there is a very good reason for this. from 1-100 you gain skill up from finding artifact fragments, but after that the only way you can get skill ups is from solving artifacts. This will save you a decent amount of pain and suffering.

How Do I Find Digsites?

Apparently people though that you could just run around surveying willy nilly, well that is not that case. You get 4 Dig Sites per continent. When you exhaust one digsite, another takes its place somewhere else on the contintent. If you open up your World Map, they will be indicated by shovels.

How Do I Find Artifacts?

Well you really don’t find artifacts, you find their fragments. After gathering up enough fragments from digsites you then solve the fragments and piece together an artifact. There are 9 total fragment types, each obtained from different Dig Sites.

Type Skill Level Location
Dwarf 1 Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor(Few)
Troll 1 Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor(Few)
Fossil 1 Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdoms(Few)
Night Elf 1 Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdoms(Few)
Orc 300 Outlands
Draenei 300 Outlands
Vrykul 375 Northrend
Nerubian 375 Northrend
Tol’vir 450 Uldum

You will no doubt also come across keystones for each type. Keystones have two purposes, being used in solving some artifacts accounting for 12 extra fragments if you find yourself a little short, or later they can be turned in for buffs in instances. Here is a list of the keystones by type.

Dwarf Dwarf Rune Stone
Troll Troll Tablet
Fossil n/a
Night Elf Highborne Scroll
Orc Orc Blood Text
Draenei Draenei Tome
Vrykul Vrykul Rune Stick
Nerubian Nerubian Obelisk
Tol’vir Tol’vir Hieroglyphic

How Do I Find Fragments?

That is the question, after all without the fragments you can’t do anything. When you enter a dig site, and use your [Survey] ability. A little telescope and blinking light will appear. The telescope points you towards the direction you want to go, and the light tells you how near your target you are. The light will blink red, yellow, or green.

lights

Red is the least accurate, basically that the fragments are somewhere in the direction the scope is facing.

red1

Yellow is a lot more informative than red. It narrows down the field of where it is, and that you are getting warmer.

Yellow1

And at last you get the green light, this has a narrow field of vision but it doesn’t give you any information about distance. A tip I would give would be to use triangulation and move up 10y and then over 10y and where those two paths cross it should be there or very close to.green1

Do I Get Anything Cool For Doing This Stuff?

Yes and maybe. There are several rare artifact projects that when you complete, they tend to take a lot more fragments than regular(common) artifacts, you can get BOA armor/weapons, mounts, vanity pets, and random little “trinkets”. When I hit 105 skill in archaeology I got the project for a Fossilized Hatching which was a little raptor skeleton vanity pet. So if you like having little knick-knacks and achievements, Archaeology is the way to go!

See you out there digging!

Hallowed Be My Name

WoWScrnShot_110110_005931

Ah yes, Hallow’s Eve. When this holiday rolls around it means only one thing… TRICK OR TREATING! It doesn’t matter what level, what class, or how much you play the game, this holiday isn’t one to miss. Masks, mounts, gear, costumes, pets, and last but not least CANDY, this holiday event has it all. Oh…and a nifty title.

Nothing says “I’m Badass” more than a title next to your name when you strut your stuff around Dalaran (or insert favorite major city hangout). While not all of us can be Kingslayers or Light of Dawns(Grats Strife), everyone who is level 78+ can be <Your Name Here> The Hallowed.

Most of this holiday you spend defending Azeroth from the menacing Headless Horseman and hoping to get an evil pumpkin as a pet or an oversized gourd to use as a helmet. Otherwise you will be spending a couple hours moving from inn to inn trick or treating all over Azeroth and Outlands, throwing pumpkins onto peoples’ heads, and getting changed into costumes via wands.

In every starting zone’s major town, ie Brill, Razor Hill, Kharanos, etc, the Headless Horseman attacks and torches the town. It is your duty as a powerful adventurer to help and put out the fire with water buckets. Not only do you get an achievement, you learn that to fully defeat the heinous villain you must find and destroy his head, which resides inside the Scarlet Monastery.

The Headless Horseman

If you happen to be level 78 or higher you can queue using the dungeon finder or talk to a floating ghost in your favorite major city. He isn’t so hard to defeat currently. HH, as he is usually called, is a simple 2 part fight.

Phase 1: Mounted, casts conflagration on a target disorienting them and doing damage. When you take him down to 0% his head pops off and the body walks around confused and immune to damage.

Phase 2: Head is flying around. Focus all damage onto it until the head and body rejoin. Repeat phase 1 and 2 until dead, although on the second time the head and body rejoin, he also summons Pumpkin Soldiers.

Well that’s my quick and dirty guide to Hallow’s End. Good luck on getting your random loot drops from the bags, as well as your Horseman’s Reins for a cool Flying/Riding mount.

End of Game End Game

Death of Raiding

One thing I’ve noticed from 2 expansions is what happens when the new expansion is about to be released. Raiding guilds either rush to finish content, or the exact opposite if its already finished. I’ve been in several kinds of guilds over the years, a 40-man raiding guild in vanilla, a couple 25-man guilds in Burning Crusade, and a 10-man “core” guild in WotLK, and several small, useless leveling guilds along the way. But every time an expansion is about to hit several things would happen.

The 40-man Vanilla Guild literally disintegrated overnight after about a month before BC. The 25man guild would have stayed together for the expansion but right before WotLK some guild drama(the great raid destroyer) caused half the guild to transfer. Thus the fractured group formed the 10-man “core” guild for Wrath, and became Kingslayers with Frostbrood Vanquishers. This time though, we had a guild discussion and we aren’t going to fix what ain’t broke. And keep it up in Cataclysm.

What to do in the absence of Raiding?

And now the fun part, sitting and waiting. With Cataclysm a little over a month away, people are handling the situation differently. My girlfriend is starting to get into PVP. I am working on achievements that either won’t be there in Cataclysm, or things I should have done a long time ago.

Recently, I picked up farming for mounts that won’t be there in Cataclysm. The Zulian tiger is a recent acquisition to my mount collection, as well as the Reins of the Raven Lord(although I think raven lord is sticking around since its part of BC). I really should get back to farming my Goblin reputation back to at least neutral.

Mainly, just hang tight. Get used to all the new talents, abilities, and system changes. Take it all in because on December 7th, everything changes…..AGAIN.
